Tuesday, Angry Birds, Part 2

12/9/2014

1) Warm Up: Given the hypotenuse, find leg lengths that will work.  This is to prepare students for creating a bulletin board based on the Pythagorean Tree Fractal

Monday: PT, Angry Birds, Day 1

12/9/2014

This is the first day of what will likely be a 3 day performance task that takes kids from using the Pythagorean theorem to find the hypotenuse to discovering the distance formula (day 2 and 3).

Notes:
  • After several days of using the Pythagorean Theorem and a very successful quiz covering it, students surprisingly had trouble realizing the need to use the PT to find the distance between the bird and pig at each time increment.
  • I could see that this would be a very difficult task and it was for both my classes.  In the future, I would not let them choose what graph paper they want to use, and guide them to setting up the correct scale and position of the bird and pig at each time increment.

End of the week: assessments

Friday 12/5 : Discovery Ed, Test 2

Thursday 12/4: Quiz, Pythagorean Theorem

Wednesday: Starting to connect to Distance Formula

12/4/2014

Picture
1) WWK: Pythagorean Triple
2) ISN - include official Pythagorean Theorem and it's converse on pages 24-25 (see picture from student interactive notebook to the left.)
3) Visit Learning Targets that connect to Distance Formula
  • Explain that these are introductory and they are not expected to know the distance formula yet.

4) PT - Acting Out
  • Students were given information about two locations that were within a certain distance of the origin, then by choosing a point on each, find the distance between the two points
  • Some students struggled with the idea that when finding the two sections of areas a certain distance from the origin that these would be concentric circles.
  • See student sample work below

5) Assignment: Quiz review

Tuesday: Converse of Pythagorean Theorem

12/2/2014

1) Warm-up: Half page, self checking puzzle "Why did the cow dislike the farmer?"  - finding the hypotenuse

2) Visit Learning Targets for Pythagorean Theorem

3) PT: Pythagorean Triples, see student work below
  • Students had to find relationships between different Pythagorean Triples, then use this relationship to discover more
  • I was amazed at how quickly students caught on, including going back to vocabulary from unit 1: scale factor

4) Assignment: Roots and Powers handout

Monday: Direct Instruction, Pythagorean Theorem

12/1/2014

1) Warm-up - flash back to the recent past with square roots and cube roots:

2. ISN update - pages 24-25, Pythagorean Theorem, with Pythagorean Square Proof, Foldable Notes, a little Pythagoras and a quote.

3) Assignment: page 134, problems 1-8

Note: Bring this lesson back to Pythagorean Tree... Could you have used the Pythagorean Theorem to help find the answer to your team's question?
