As a math teacher, I have pretty highly polished record keeping skills. Over the years, I have been exceptionally consistent in keeping records and have even found ways for students to contribute to keeping their records up to date. I have also found ways to allow them to keep track of their progress, earning rewards for achieving predetermined goals. This is particularly true in my extended math classes, where students dedicate a lot of time on adaptive math programs. With each working independently, I created a calendar where students reaching at least three benchmarks a day earn a small prize and then a large prize upon completing a unit. Students enjoy the independence of keeping track of their own progress. For some students, they get competitive with friends, encouraging additional progress.
However, the stay at home order given the Covid 19 pandemic, even record keeping had a learning curve. With four different preps and many different platforms utilized for instruction, keeping accurate records of student progress was difficult and time consuming. I learned early on that how I named assignments is crucial and keeping track both electronically as well as on a data entry sheet was crucial. Before grades were published, I sent multiple emails to encourage students to check my grades for accuracy. I also created a google form for students to fill out, proving they had checked their recorded grades and giving an easy way to communicated and assignments I had missed grading.
